ABSTRACT

Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) is usually preceded by infection with certain bacteria and viruses. Parasitic infection has rarely been reported as a causal factor for AIDP. Neurological manifestations following malaria is commonly seen with P. falciparum. There are only few case reports of Guillain–Barré Syndrome or facial diplegia following P. vivax infection. Here we are reporting a patient who developed AIDP and facial diplegia within two weeks following successful treatment of P. vivax infection.

ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune, multisystem disorder. Lupus nephritis is a common manifestation of SLE. Though rare, SLE may also involve lower urinary tract in the form of lupus cystitis with associated complications like hydroureteronephrosis. Lupus cystitis may present with gastro intestinal (GI) symptoms as the initial manifestation. The case reported herein is concerned with concomitant lupus nephritis and cystitis in a young female who also had associated GI symptoms and hydroureteronephrosis.

ABSTRACT

Filariasis is one of the major public health hazards among Indian population. The common features are asymptomatic microfilariaemia, acute adenolymphangitis, hydrocele and chronic lymphatic disease. There are very few reported cases of pancytopenia as a presenting feature of Filariasis. We describe a case of Filariasis who presented with features of pancytopenia and microfilariae were demonstrated in bone marrow aspirate.

ABSTRACT

Background: The study aimed to validate and compare the Siriraj score, Guy's hospital score, Greek score, and Besson score in a group of stroke patients. Materials and Methods: We assessed the stroke scores and compared them to computed tomography (CT) scan of brain. Results: Two hundred stroke patients (129 ischemic stroke) were included. For ischemic stroke, sensitivity and specificity were 71% and 92% (Siriraj score), 73% and 98% (Greek score), 59% and 87% (Guy's hospital score), and 65% and 98% (Besson score), respectively. For intracranial hemorrhage, sensitivity and specificity were 84% and 89% (Siriraj score), 80% and 99% (Greek score), and 63% and 95% (Guy's hospital score), respectively. Using receptor operating characteristic curve, the greatest area under the curve was obtained for Greek score (0.973). For bedside accurate and safe diagnosis of ischemic stroke, the best cut off was for Greek score (1.5) which identified 47% of ischemic stroke patients. Conclusions: The Greek score appears as the single best score. Using the newly developed discriminant cut off value; a substantial number of patients may be started with anti-platelet therapy while awaiting CT scan of brain.

ABSTRACT

A prospective follow up for 7 years (2004-2010) revealed 10.2% children (n=158) had vasculitis among all rheumatological cases (n=1544). Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP) (56.9%) and Kawasaki disease (KD) (24%) were major groups.

ABSTRACT

This study attempts to determine the clinical manifestations, severity and immunological features of JIA and its influence on growth and associated cardiac involvement in children below 16 years of age. This is a cross sectional study in a tertiary referral center on 50 consecutive children below the age of 16 years. Each patient was thoroughly examined and scored on Juvenile Arthritis Functional Assessment Scale. Relevant blood tests, cardiac and ophthalmic evaluation was done. Growth patterns were noted. There was an overall equal sex ratio, though there was a male preponderance in the systemic and oligoarthritis groups. Disturbance of growth frequently occurred in children suffering from JIA. Cardiac involvement should be looked for in cases of JIA. Significant number of cases of PSRA is diagnosed in children presenting with chronic arthritis.
